The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed the acquittal of 12 accused in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case, but clarified that they won’t be sent back to jail for now.
The court also made it clear that the Bombay High Court’s ruling will not be treated as a precedent.
The stay came in response to a plea by the Maharashtra government, which had challenged the High Court’s decision to acquit the accused. On Tuesday, the apex court had agreed to hear the matter after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta sought an urgent listing, citing the seriousness of the issue.
