Gangster under watch
Jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi has emerged as one of India’s most closely monitored and controversial criminal figures, with his name repeatedly surfacing in cases involving alleged threats, extortion attempts, and violent attacks targeting high-profile individuals both in India and abroad.
Despite being behind bars for nearly a decade, investigators allege Bishnoi continues to run an extensive criminal network through associates across multiple Indian states and foreign countries.
He is currently lodged in a high-security ward at Sabarmati Central Jail, where he was shifted in August 2023, and has been incarcerated since 2015 under strict restrictions on movement. Authorities have barred his transfer to other state police forces under Section 268 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Law enforcement agencies allege Bishnoi heads a well-organised crime syndicate and have linked him to several high-profile cases, including the recent killing of Baba Siddique in Mumbai. Internationally, his network has been connected to targeted violence against pro-Khalistan figures in Canada.
