An
earthquake of magnitude 5.1 struck Assam’s Morigaon district on Monday morning. According to the recordings of the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the tremor struck Assam at 4:00 am. Local authorities maintained that there had been no loss of life or property damage due to the earthquake.
The NCS report further noted the epicentre of the tremor was located at a latitude of 26.37° North and a longitude of 92.29° East. It also mentioned the earthquake had a depth of 50 kilometres.
The earthquake was felt across several parts of central Assam, including Morigaon and nearby districts like Kamrup Metropolitan, Nagaon, East Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, Hojai, Dima Hasao, Golaghat, and Jorhat.
Sources told India Today that tremors were also felt in the state’s capital, Guwahati. Multiple reports suggested that the earthquake’s impact even reached parts of
West Bengal and other northeastern states, along with neighbouring countries like Nepal and Bhutan.
While no casualties have been reported so far, the quake caused panic among the inhabitants, and many of them rushed out of their homes. It is pertinent to note that the northeastern zone in India falls under the seismic zone and hence is prone to earthquakes.
A 4.3 quake struck Nepal
Meanwhile, an earthquake of magnitude 4.3 hit Udayapur district in eastern Nepal. While local officials confirmed the news of the quake, there were no immediate reports of loss of life or damage of any kind due to the quake.
According to Nepal’s National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre (NEMRC), the earthquake struck at 10:51 pm on Saturday. The epicentre of the quake was at Bagapati in the Udayapur district. The tremors were also felt by neighbouring districts.
Earlier on Saturday morning, an earthquake measuring 4.6 magnitude hit the Taplejung district in eastern Nepal. The Himalayan nation witnesses numerous earthquakes in any given year since it lies in one of the most active tectonic zones (Seismic zones IV and V).
