As seventeen children from a school go missing, parents get furious, the police force is baffled. They don’t know what actually happened. There is just one kid in the whole class who is spared and how that’s the whole mystery in Weapons. The whole blame game starts in schools and fingers are pointed at a particular teacher from whose class the students go missing. The parents too are agitated and why wouldn’t they?
Justine Gandy, the third-grade teacher played by Julia Garner is bombarded from all corners. She is being called a witch too. Her life becomes a living hell. Set in the fictional town of Maybrook, Illinois, which begins with a disturbing event of 17 of 18 children from third-standard disappear at one go around 2:17 am, leaving behind only one student. The entire community can’t just get over it. They are scared and are in deep sorrow. As usual the blame game starts, because there isn’t any answer to this mishap.
All eyes fall on Justine Gandy, the class teacher of third standard. Her life too falls apart. She goes back to heavy drinking and also tries finding out the mystery behind the missing kids along with her police officer friend, with whom she had a relationship in the past. She doesn’t give up and keeps following the one single kid from her class who didn’t go missing. She believes that there is some mystery in the house that he lives in since all the windows are covered by newspaper.
Then we have another important protagonist to the story Archer Graff played by Josh Brolin. He is an angry and grieving father of one of the missing kids, Mathew. Archer too is not willing to give up and loses hope on the police force. Directed by Zach Cregger, explores the fear and anger surrounding a community in the most realistic way.
Weapons is an unconventional horror film which is engaging and immersive and though you are scared there will be instances when you will laugh your heart out. There is a kid’s voice that narrates a part of the story right at the beginning of the movie which says that the whole mystery went unsolved and that there wasn’t any explanation to the whole incident.
The best thing about this film is that rather than just picking on just one character, there are so many perspectives to the story. There is a thief, there is a police officer who has a backstory with the teacher, there is a parent, there is a kid who doesn’t go missing and most importantly there is an old aunt that lives in the mysterious house that nobody knows of.
The ending though is a little absurd, but the movie can make you think and definitely give you goosebumps. Now why is the film called Weapons, for that you need to watch the movie.
