A drunk driver in an Audi car allegedly ran over five people, including an 8-year-old girl, who were sleeping on a sidewalk near Shiva Camp in Delhi’s Vasant Vihar area, according to officials on Saturday.
The incident happened in the early hours of July 9.
The victims, who included two couples and the young girl, were injured in the crash and quickly taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The incident happened near the Indian Oil Petrol Pump in the area. The driver was identified as 40-year-old Utsav Shekhar from Dwarka.
Police confirmed through medical reports that Shekhar was intoxicated at the time of the crash.When police got the call, they rushed to the scene and found that the injured had already been taken to hospitals.
“Statements of eyewitnesses were recorded, wherein they stated that a white colour Audi car ran over them while they were sleeping on the footpath,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West) Amit Goel was quoted as saying by Indian Express.
The victims were identified as Ladhi (40), her 8-year-old daughter Bimla, her husband Sabami (also known as Chirma, 45), Ram Chander (45), and his wife Narayani (35).
All of them are originally from Rajasthan, police said.
Initial police investigation and eyewitness accounts say a white Audi car ploughed into the people sleeping on the sidewalk. The driver was arrested, and legal action has been started against him. The police are still investigating to figure out exactly what led to the incident.
Man suffers brain injury in separate road accident
In a separate incident three days later, on July 12, a 30-year-old man named Vaideshwaran suffered a severe brain injury in a hit-and-run on Najafgarh Road near Uttam Nagar West Metro Station.
He was found unconscious next to his burnt scooter around 1 am.
A broken number plate, thought to belong to the vehicle that hit him, was found at the scene.
“The crime team inspected the spot. Two people were found near the spot, but they refused to give any statement, stating they did not want to involve themselves in a police case,” police said.
A case has been filed at Bindapur police station under Sections 281 (reckless or negligent driving) and 125(A) (actions endangering human life or safety) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Vaideshwaran is currently on life support at B L K Super Speciality Hospital.
